Social Marketing Strategies for Small Businesses
By Travis Campbell of MarketingProfessor.com
The keyword in social marketing is ACTION. Social marketing for small business is designed to find those with like interests and expectations and influence them to act. Through social marketing, small businesses are able to find prospective customers and inject their respective brands into the online market-scape. There are, however, social marketing strategies that are of greater benefit than others when implementing a small business marketing plan. Group Rates. Membership is the first step toward successful social marketing. Participation in specific groups can broaden awareness of you company name and its products or services. Places to seek for worthwhile memberships include: * Yahoo! Answers. Let your prospective clients know how much you know. Share your expertise on relevant topics in discussion groups and blogs. * Networking sites. Formerly perceived as a virtual hangout for the teens and ‘tweens, social networks have become an important tool in the social marketing strategies employed by many online marketing experts. Be cautious when venturing into the social networking scene: o Pick and choose. Avoid signing up for each and every social networking site available. There are those that simply will not meet any marketing need you have and you will not only be wasting your own time but you may also damage your online reputation. o Natural selection. When searching for “friends” on networking sites, make your selections carefully and nurture the online relationships you establish. Your goal is to network and make connections in ways that will benefit you rather than alienate you. Participating in discussions and creating online friendships can help establish your reputation as a knowledgeable contributor. With regular input on relevant sites, you can increase your own web traffic and generate referrals among your online “friends.” Media Blitz. Take advantage of the media craze online and implement videos and photos in your online marketing campaign. There are multiple sites on which you may share your productions online: * Videos. Use the love of videos to your advantage. Video topics can vary greatly; make certain you use a pitch and promotional style that suits both you and your customer. Here are some suggestions for including video in your social marketing strategy: o Weekly briefings o How-to’s o New product launch * Photos. Photos are as effective as videos when marketed properly. For a negligible amount of time and money you can effectively market yourself and your small business toward a specific target audience through such photo-related sites as Flickr. There are additional advantages to implementing photo sharing into your marketing scheme: o Show and tell. Photos allow your interested guests see what you have to offer. o Demographics. Photos help target specific audiences for relative products and services. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Integrating the use of photos can quite possibly tell your future clients more with one image than you could explain in one full blog. Open Up and Say Blog. Blogs are the ideal means to establishing an ongoing dialogue with current and future customers. There are more than a few options for participating in blogs. The purpose is to find the perfect blog(s) for your social marketing needs and make the most of your blogging conversations. Either of these suggestions will work for any social marketing plan: * Start your own blog. Do not wait to find the perfect blog to post your comments. Create your own blog and start posting immediately. Make sure your comments have value to your customers and a variety of subject matter to appeal to a wide variety of reader. * Join a blog community. By visiting other blogs you can familiarize yourself with what other industry professionals are talking about. Through the exchange of ideas and ongoing dialogue, you can establish your reputation and provide potential customers with access to your site via link placement. Blogs are a viable social marketing tool that will allow you to stay abreast of customer interests and industry fluctuations. Whether you post your own blog or participate in a blogging community, your input will become a valuable addition to your customers’ source of information. Regardless of how many or which social marketing strategies you use in your small business marketing plan, it is important to take advantage of the current dependence on social marketing sites for product and service information. Through social marketing sites you can introduce your small business to those who you already know have an interest. |
