Without recognizing the role of the other components in the marketing “rings of intimacy,” you may be missing out on the easiest way to attract customers and grow your audience. Ring 1: Email Marketing. Naturally, email marketing is at the heart of your email marketing strategy. It is one of the “rings of intimacy” that connect you more personally with your customers. Here is how you stay connected with ring #1:

* Ask permission. Before you land in someones email inbox, it is advisable to make certain you are welcome. Giving your target audience the opportunity, and the power, to decide whether or not to join your email list says a lot for your relationship.
* On a personal level. Once you have achieved the coveted prize of customers’ email addresses, keep the customer first. Nothing says, “What’s your name again?” like that “Dear Customer” email that gets sent to the junk folder quicker than the click of the mouse.

Your customers are a top priority. Without them your business is non-existent. Make them feel important while giving them a reason to become a member of your marketing fan club.

Ring 2: Social Networking. Marketing intimacy is becoming a must in the world of Web 2.0 and email marketing. Maintaining a certain level of informality while implementing a social marketing plan puts your customers as ease and encourages their participation in the many aspects of social networking.

* Make friends. Join as many social networking sites as is practical to make those connections you need to fulfill your email marketing strategy. Take advantage of the social format and finesse your way into the hearts of your current and future customers.
* Group discussions. With active participation in blogs and other group discussions you can present yourself as a resident expert. Put your credibility on display and those with whom you rub virtual elbows will support you with the offering of themselves and hopefully their friends.

The transformation to Web 2.0 and its transparency insists that you recognize the need for social marketing when developing a successful email marketing strategy. Relationships and the connections that come with them will more often than not fuel your online marketing success.

Ring 3: Micro-blogs. Last but not least, those little blogs that could can give your email marketing strategy its second wind. Check out what micro-blogs like Twitter can mean to your email marketing strategy:

* More for less. You can make connections and cultivate your lists without extensive campaigning or lengthy dialogue. Micro-blogs allow you to make your point in that short but sweet micro-blog kind of way.
* We’ll be in touch. Micro-blogs leave the power to stay connected in the hands of the customer. But, with a carefully worded message, your audience will be waiting with baited breath to hear your latest and greatest news.

The more connected you become to your customers, the more intimate the messages become. While not letting go of your professionalism, adopt some key features of your social marketing plan to boost your email marketing strategy and your audience numbers.
